The California Gold Rush
In 1848 James Marshall, a carpenter, was the first person to discover gold. He found it accidently when he was building a sawmill for James Sutter. The Sutter Mill was located in the town of Coloma. His discovery lead to the California Gold Rush. From 1848- 1855 people fled to California in search of gold. At the end of the gold rush $80 million had been mined in gold.
